The term “Mid-Autumn” first appeared in the Book of Rites (Zhou Li). Historical records indicate that ancient emperors held rituals—worshiping the sun in spring and the moon in autumn. It wasn’t until the early Tang Dynasty that the Mid-Autumn Festival became an official fixed holiday, as documented in the Tang Shu (“Book of Tang”) under Emperor Taizong’s reign: “On the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, the Mid-Autumn Festival.” By the Song Dynasty, moon-gazing had become widespread, with people expressing their longing for family reunion and joy over harvests through the luminous full moon.
